Blackboard FAQs for Students
This information has been gathered from the Blackboard Academic Suit User Manual, Online Manual, and NEIT staff experience.
Section 1 User Account |

- Go to http://blackboard.neit.edu and login into the system with your username and password.
- Click on the name of your course in the “My courses” box on the right hand side of the screen
- Use the navigation buttons on the left hand side of the screen to access the weekly content or Bb tools

- Close the browser window with the “Red X” or
- Click the “log out” icon at the top of the page.
|

| Section 2 Getting Started |
|
|

- Once you log into Bb, you will see three “tabs” near the top of the page under the NETECH logo, The “NEIT” tab is your default home page.
- Your name will be displayed just under the “NEIT” tab.
- The “Courses” tab is a list of all NEIT courses including MCDean courses.
- The “System Admin” tab may or may not be visible to you based upon your assigned role in the system. Please be very careful in the System Admin area if you have access to it this controls the entire system.
- The “NEIT” page consists of a Tools box, and “Announcement” box, a “Quick Tutorials” box and a “My Courses” box. The page content and display can be modified by the “Modify Content” and “Modify Layout” buttons on the top right of the page.
- The “Tools” and “Announcement” boxes offer you access to the tools and announcements of each course you are involved in without entering the courses through the “My Courses” box. Simply click on any link to see the corresponding information.

- Enter any course by clicking on the course name in the “My Courses” box to see the Course Menu and Tools Panel for that course.

- Click on the Detail View at the bottom of the navigation window to see the expandable file menu of the course.
- Click on the Quick View at the bottom of the navigation window to go back to the button view.

- All Bb courses are navigated by clicking on a button in the left navigation menu and entering the corresponding page in the large window on the right hand side of the screen.
- Each screen will be populated with text or web links to other information.

- Click on Course Map in the Tools menu below the navigation buttons
- The Course map is a text view of all the course folders and the contents of the folders.
- Click on any item to go to that item.

- Use the Email system within the Communications window to select the users you are trying to contact and send them an email
|
|
|
|

- Some features in Bb require that you enter text use a Text Box editor.
- You may simply type your information in the text box. The Text box does give you the ability to format the text with a choice of font size, color and other controls.

- The text box has a spell check feature that you can click once you have typed your information.
|
|
|
|

- The Text box also has a Math and Science Notation Tool that allows you to choose math and science symbols to include in your information.
- Click on the Notation tool to enter the notation window
- Select the notations you want from the icon menu and build your notation
- Click submit to enter your final notation into the text box

| Section 3 Course |

- Content areas contain the content for the course. The content is assembled and placed into an appropriate content area based upon instructor preference.
- You enter a content area by clicking on the navigation button for that area on the left side of the Bb course web page
- Once inside the content page you can read any text or link to any file that has been added to the page.

- One specific type of content is an assessment or test. Tests are accessed by clicking on the link to the test that has been added to the course by the instructor.
- The first page of the assessment tells you what test you will be taking. Click Ok to begin the test.
- Scroll down through the questions and answer each question
- Click Submit complete the assessment.
- Some assessments are constructed so that you can save them and come back to them at a later time. Some assessments are constructed so that you can take them multiple times. Your instructor will inform you of the test details in the instructions for each assessment.

- Some content areas, called assignments, require you to download a file (like a Microsoft Word document) so that you can fill it out and return it to your instructor.
- The assignment page will provide a link to the file. Right click on the link and Save the file to your computer.
- After you have completed the assignment, go back into the assignment page in the course and you will see a box where you can browse to the file you just completed and upload it to the system for your instructor to evaluate.

- Learning units are an organized sequence of materials that you work through by clicking on “slides” of information.
- Once you open up a Learning unit you use the arrow keys at the top of the learning unit page to navigate through the information

- An External Link is a link to a web page outside of the course.
- Click on the link to access the added material
- Some external links will be set up so that they open in a new browser window. The Bb window will remain open behind the new window.
- Close the external link window or minimize it to return to the Bb course.

- Click on the link to the quiz or survey
- Click OK on the confirmation page
- Answer each question
- Click Submit

- Click on the NEIT Tab at the top left of the page and review the courses in the “My Blackboard Courses” box on the right of the page.

- Contren Connect is the name of the company that has created the course material for this course.
- The Bb course has multiple links directly to the Contren Connect web site with the course content.
- Once you click on the link to the content you will have to log into the Contren site.

- Click on the Course information button on the right of the page
- Click on the Syllabus or other folder
- Click on the file line to the syllabus file. The file will open in the browser fro your review.

- The course calendar is available in the Course Tools
- The Academic year calendar is available in the Course Information folder.
|
|

Section 4 Communication |
|
|
| |
Introduction on individual communication tools and stimulating collaboration tools

- Click on the email icon in Course Tools
- Select the other course members you wish to email
- Enter an email subject
- Type a message
- Click submit
|

- Click the Discussion Board in Communications
- Click the Forum you want to participate in
- Click the Thread you want to respond to
- Read the question and or other replies
- Click the Reply button to add to the discussion
|

- Once in a thread area, click the box to the left of the thread and click the collect box in the menu bar
- The collect page will give you tools to sort and filter the various responses.

- Enter a discussion forum and click the Add Thread button
- Enter you question or answers.
- Click submit
|

- Hit the Reply button to the right of the post and type in your response in the text window provided.
|

- A group forum works exactly like a regular discussion forum except your instructor has to add you into the group in order for you to see and select it.
|
|

- Collaboration tools are available in the Collaboration menu.
- Click on the Join button to the right of the tool you want to use
- A Java plugin will have to load before you enter the tool
- Type your questions and comments in the text box provided to participate in the online chat or classroom

- Click the “Send Private message” icon and choose the person you want to send to and type your message.
|
|
|

- Click the Roster icon in Communications
- Enter the name of the person you are searching for and click Search
- Any information on that person will be displayed below.

- Session Archives are available if the instructor makes them available on the Collaboration menu.

Section 5 Other Tools |

- Click on the Home page button in the Navigation Menu to view announcements
|

- The Digital Drop Box is available in Course Tools
- The tool is a remote storage system that allows you to add a file for storage and later retrieval or to add a file to send to the instructor.
- Click the Add file or Send File button and browse to the file you want to store or send.

- Open a Course.
- Click Tools on the Course Menu.
- Select Calendar
OR
- Select Calendar from a tab.

- The Address Book contains a search function at the top of the page. Users may search using different variables selected from the search tabs.

- The NEIT Tab is Your Blackboard home page that displays:
- Links to all of your courses in the “My Blackboard Courses” box,
- Links to all of the tools in all of your current courses in the “Tools” box,
- Current announcements from all of your courses,
- You have the ability to use the “Modify Content” and “Modify Layout” to mange what the page shows and how it looks. Both of these functions hide or show available features.
- Each box on the page can also be modified by using the “pencil” icon on the top right of each box to choose what you wish to show or hide.

- You may minimize any of the boxes on the page with the minimize/expand icon at the top left of each box.
- You cannot edit the content of the boxes but you can use the “Modify content” button to show or hide available features/courses.
